Steve Irwin, wildlife conservationist and creator of shows including The Croc Files, The Crocodile Hunter Diaries, and New Breed Vets, died this morning. Irwin, 44, suffered fatal injury while filming a nature documentary with stingrays off Queensland.

Choking back tears, Irwin’s Manager, John Stainton, said Irwin had gone “over the top of a stingray and a stingray’s barb went up and went into his chest and put a hole into his heart”.

Irwin’s Crocodile Hunter program was first broadcast in 1992 and has been shown around the world on cable network Discovery. Irwin leaves behind wife, Terri, and two children: Bindi Sue, born 1998, and Robert (Bob), born 2003.
